Who’s On Our Shirt? Part 4- Glenn Burke, Professional Baseball Player

Glenn Burke is known as the first openly gay man in the Major Baseball League and noted as the creator of the high five.   Burke revealed some challenges throughout his baseball career in which he was called derogatory terms, teammates refused to shower with him in the room, and he was even propositioned to marry a woman.  Through it all he made the firm decision to live in his truth.

Later in his life, Burke had challenges with drug use and his health.  Burke was diagnosed with AIDS and discussed it in interviews. After his death, he was inducted into the National Gay and Lesbian Sports Hall of Fame and Oakland Athletics honored him during their Athletics Pride Night.

Thank you, Glenn Burke.  Because of you, we know more.
